Warm Light = Cool Shadows? Or Is It A Myth?
I have often heard the rule that if you have warm light you have cool shadows, and if you have cool light you have warm shadows. But is this thr truth or a myth?

    always interested to see more about this. I come from the music side, and am exploring how to "properly" map sound to color, in terms of audiovisual performance. Most audiovisual stuff is "oh this look cool, match it to the beat/etc"... but I ended up doing a similar thing.. map the visible spectrum to the harmonic series.

    Can this be reversed ? Start with a black, grey & white drawing and depending on the frequency of line spacing go towards saturated colors. Wolfgang von Goethe writes of colors optically coming from the edge of black and white.

    This is incredible. This is exactly the thing I'm struggling with when painting on my tablet, and my colours always look out of place. This video really put it into perspective for me! Which is a bit funny because I started using gray paints in traditional art and noticed that it worked to desaturate my colours. Time to translate it into digital!

    Great video and ideas. This blew me away. And I’m still somewhat confused 😢 is the temperature of the light determined by where the Sun is in the sky, or something else? I noticed sometimes it’s the temperature of the object - like the burning coal that you showed - but other times it’s the temperature of the light source. how do I know what temperature to move towards in the case of shade or light? Gosh, I’m confused please explore this in other videos!

    • @LightingMentor
      @LightingMentor 7 дней назад

      Great question! Don't think about the light source or the object, but rather the amount of light bouncing off of the object. If a piece of coal is emitting light, like the block of carbon or the filament of an incandescent lightbulb, the more energy or temperature it has the stronger the color will shift towards white. If this is light bouncing off of a surface that is not emitting light then it depends on how strong the light source is at that particular angle. I hope this helps a bit. I did make a newer video about shadow color that might help clarify it more.

    Hey speaking of textural detail at one point, this is sort of a shot in the dark but could you make a video highlighting how to paint said details? It’s what I seem to struggle most with when I approach, and there’s no real tutorial video out there from what I’ve seen that helps me get a grip on it mentally

    The very thing I've been saying for YEEAAARRRS!!! Oh my gosh, someone else finally says it!! I've been saying shadow "color" is really just ambient lighting, aka anything that is bouncing or scattering light so that it may reach the darker areas. I have thought about doing a deep dive video on it for YEARS, now! If I ever do, I definitely want to guide folks to this video. Your demonstrations and explanations are immaculate!

    How can I learn to apply this with traditional media? I'm learning to paint with acrylics and I understand the concept as you explain it using a digital colour wheel, but I'd love to be able to mix paint like this intuitively. Could anyone provide me with an example to try for myself, or point me in the direction of a video on the same topic but using traditional media? Thank you and great video!

    • @vincentgoupil180

      *Toon Nagtegaal* (Dutch) has a RUclips channel explaining very simply mixing the primaries RGB in acrylics. For example, mixing the complementary colors blue and orange to get a grey. Orange as a secondary color is a combination of the primaries red and yellow. So, to get a grey from a complementary color mix a combination of the other two primaries. Note, Nagtegaal uses the printer's CMYK (cyan, magenta, yellow and black) instead of RGB (red, green and blue) terminology but the result is the same. Start with his earlier videos.

      Green and magenta do play into this but in a less obvious way. But I can say that if you add more temperature/intensity onto a green object, like grass or leaves, it will shift towards yellow. I might have to do another video about green/magenta on it's own at some point. Great question

    No doubt mind blowing and a big aha-moment for me. But as an artist working with actual pigments (watercolor, acrylics…) I struggle with the “desaturation”. When you do it on the screen, it gives you the option to move inside the triangle between white and black aka any kind of grey desaturation, but with pigments you usually use the complementary in order to make black or grays. Where does that leave me on the color wheel? I apologize if I am too forward with my question, or if anybody has asked that question before, I tried to read too many of the comments, but did not find it. I would be happy for any thoughts on that. Thank you for you’re interesting videos.
